In the sixties when the Beatles "discovered" India, anyone worth their flower-power jeans and love beads ran to dine in Indian restaurants. Among the first was Amar Patel's Indian Rice Factory. A suitably dim interior, utilitarian furnishings, and a resident mouse made us feel as hip as the hippest hippie. We cleaned our plates of vegetable pakoras, chickpea and tomato stew, and vegetables koftas, and imagined a kinship with the commune dwellers. The '70s, '80s, and '90s came and went.
Today, this restaurant has painted, polished, and cleaned up its act. The brilliant Indian pinks and greens are reflected in the glass panels, halogen lighting, and gleaming surfaces. Even the food has been so gussied up, it mow includes trendy Chilean sea bass. Frankly, I think it's wise to stick to the tried and true. Lamb Toronto, a slow-simmered Lamb shank in spinach curry, is pleading, as are some of the vegetarian stews. And the kitchen's own ice creams are fruity and unusual. No longer a nostalgia trip, this is the look of the new and modern India.
